India and France to Increase Defense Cooperation

France has agreed to increase its defense cooperation with India. This was agreed upon in the meeting between French defense minister Gerard Longuet met his Indian counterpart A K Antony.

French defense minister is in India to increase the chances of French Rafale in the the Indian MMRCA (medium multi-role combat aircraft) contract for 126 fighter jets.

French Rafale is currently competing against the  Eurofighter Typhoon after the elimination of the  American F/A-18 'Super Hornet' and F-16 'Super Viper', Swedish Gripen (Saab), and Russian MiG-35 last month.

France is also providing Indian navy Scorpene submarines under a contract worth Rs 23,562-crore and is looking to sign a deal for the upgrade of the 51 Mirage-2000 H fighters. This upgrade package will cost India about Rs 11,000 crore.
