Indian Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Dhruv has crashed at around 8.50am at Namkum forest near Kolad village resulting in the death of three on board.
ALH Dhruv helicopter of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) was taking part in the anti-Naxal operations when it crashed on the outskirts of Ranchi.
Pilot,s Captain SP Singh and Captain KV Thomas and a technician, Manoj Swain of the Border Security Force's air wing were killed in th crash.
Indigenous developed Indian ALH Dhruv helicopter was on its way to Chaibasa from Ranchi. Ten minutes into the flight, its Shakti (Ardiden 1H) turboshaft engine caught fire resulting the crash of the helicopter.
This is the 6th crash of the Indian Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and 4th helicopter crash within last year under the Pawan Hans service.
The Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), a five ton utility helicopter has been indigenously designed by the Indian aerospace giant Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
Indian Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in his report has said, "As against the envisaged indigenisation level of 50% (by 2008), 90% of the value of material used in each ALH is still imported from foreign suppliers."
