Indian Air Force will locate the 1st squadron of domestically designed and produced LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) Tejas fighter jet at Sulur Airbase near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.
According to a DRDO Chief Controller (R&D) Dr W Selvamurthy, IAF will station 20 LCA Tejas fighter jets at Sulur in the 1st phase by early 2012.
Indian Air Force will add another 20 LCA Tejas fighter jets later on.
LCA Tejas fighter jet has been designed by ADA & DRDO and produced by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
Aviation Week has reported last year that Indian Light Combat Aircraft (LCA Tejas) fighter jet failed to meet performance requirements laid down by the service for the limited-profile Mk.1 platform.
They quoted an IAF official saying that Tejas will not be the fighter the air force had agreed to accept for limited squadron service. Parameters which were not met by the DRDO last year included sustained turn rate, speed at low altitude, angle of attack and certain weapon delivery profiles.
IAF has already selected General Electric’s F414-INS6 for the LCA MK-II, a proposed improved version of the LCA.
At present, LCA MK-I is undergoing trials at Chandan firing ranges of Jaisalmer are part of final operational trials (FOC). These trials are likely to be completed by the end of September and aircraft will be cleared for operational service in the latter part of 2012.
LCA MK-I fighter jet has already completed over 1,670 test flights and maximum speed of Mach 1.4 has been achieved till August 2011.
LCA Tejas looks like a cut paste of our very own SEA HARRIER aircrsfts.
