United States Offers F-35 Lightning II Stealth Fighter To India

The United States has offers to sell F-35 Lightning II fifth generation fighter jet to the Indian Air Force. The US companies lost the $ 10 billion Indian Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) competition to the European firms as India selected Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale as finalists.

Pentagon has said in its report to the US Congress that Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) is the best available aircraft in the world and "Should India indicate interest in the JSF, the United States would be prepared to provide information on the JSF and its requirements (infrastructure, security, etc) to support India's future planning."

The F-35 Lightning II is a single-seat, single-engine 5th generation stealth fighter which has been developed by the Lockheed Martin to replace legacy fighter jets in service with United States Marine Corps, United States Air Force and United States Navy.

US has formed a joint consortium with eight other countries including United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, Turkey, Australia, Norway and Denmark for the development of the F-35 Lightning II as an affordable fighter jet.

The development costs of the F-35 Lightning II JSF are estimated to be over US$40 billion out of which US$4.375 billion has been provided by the above mentioned countries. United States will purchase about 2,400 F-35 JSF fighter jet at estimated cost of US$200 billion.
